Another day, another round of liberation from the brave U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.

I'll put a big jump in this one, but just know that what you are going to see is VERY VERY graphic. It depicts the actions of America's Kill Team in Afghanistan: displaying severed heads, mutilated corpses, murdered teenagers, and other such depravities.

We have no business here. None. What. So. Ever.

Like every other would-be conquerer of Afghanistan, we have resorted to depravity that is near-unimaginable: Happened to the Moghuls, the Mongols, Alexander of Macedon, the British, the Soviets, and now us...as though history were at all irrelevant.

On January 15th, 2010, U.S. soldiers in Bravo Company stationed near Kandahar executed an unarmed Afghan boy named Gul Mudin in the village of La Mohammad Kalay. Reports by soldiers at the scene indicate that Mudin was about 15 years old. According to sworn statements, two soldiers – Cpl. Jeremy Morlock and Pfc. Andrew Holmes – staged the killing to make it look like they had been under attack. Ordering the boy to stand still, they crouched behind a mud wall, tossed a grenade at him and opened fire from close range.

The rest are far too graphic for even my stomach to handle. Suffice it say, the links above show the vicious, brutal, inhuman and barbarous actions of the "Kill Team". And they are not alone. If anyone thinks for one second that a drone that kills tens of innocent civilians is a more sterile warfare, then you are sadly mistaken.


War is a sick fucking enterprise, and not a single one of the actions we've been engaged in since 2001 has been justified. Not one. Afghanistan didn't attack us; Iraq didn't declare war upon us. And they have every good reason and right to continue killing U.S. soldiers as long we continue with our imperial follies: We are the invaders, and every nation -every person- on the planet recognizes the right to self-defense.

The photos collected by soldiers included many shots of local children, often filed alongside images of bloody casualties. At one point, soldiers in 3rd Platoon talked about throwing candy out of a Stryker vehicle as they drove through a village and shooting the children who came running to pick up the sweets.

Saddest thing you'll read today...

...in a deeply, nation-questioning, existential way. This isn't about politics, per se,  more it is about the calamity that our fraudulent FIRE* economy has wrought on those who aren't beneficiaries of those sectors.

The wife of the man who held a Florida school board at gunpoint said Wednesday that her husband was a gentle giant who was pushed over the edge by the economy and frustrated over her losing her teaching job.

"He wanted to get me an answer," Rebecca Duke said a day after her husband, Clay Duke, killed himself. He shot at school board members in Panama City, missing some of them by mere inches, before he exchanged gunfire with a security guard. As he lay on the floor in the boardroom, he shot himself to death in the head.

Sounds like just a gun-crazed, anti-gub'mint 'winger, doesn't it? Someone who hates the Man, and just went off the deep end?

Well, he did go off the deep end, but not for the reasons you'd think: It wasn't a product of random hatred, or a tax-protestin' conspiracy nut, or a ranting unhinged man...his were the actions of desperation that our society has created in the burgeoning underclass...

"The economy and the world just got the better of him," Rebecca Duke said in a rambling press conference to talk about the man she loved.

I am not for one instant condoning his actions, and am greatful that the body count was just one. However, I am deeply saddened that the country has fallen into such a balkanized state of haves and have nots such that violence seems the only way to respond. When you play by the rules, yet our bullshit illusory economy continues to shit on you, when our policy makers are blind, deaf and clinically fucking sociopathic, there is left nothing but a hollow, often-misplaced, impotent rage.

So, America. Everyone is too big to fail except for we, the people; all 370 million of us who are extorted, cajoled, imprisoned and indebted by at least 40% of our income to pay for those privileged few. These weren't the first shots of a class war; the class war has been waged for a while now. However, these may be the first actual shots that will wake people up, and pay attention to the seething frustrations in our world. Ours is rapidly approaching a failed state, where the only thing keeping the minions in line is agitprop and the not-inconsiderate state violence inflicted on our citizens through a militarized police force.

The DOJ, without a warrant or court order, have been utilizing a system known as "hotwatches" to track individuals of interest. The only time, upon administrative approval of this domestic spying, that a court is involved is not to safeguard the privacy interests of American citizens, but to issue a gag order to the Banks and Credit Card issuers for non-disclosure.

Really, I shouldn't be surprised at this point.

Lest anyone think the damages wrought by the Bush Administration (and sadly, still continued by the Obama administration) simply don't affect anyone but foreigners and terrorists, let this be a warning to you. Our civil liberties have been eroded so terribly over the past decade, that we may never fully get them back. And, don't count on courts to help you either; the federal courts have turned into one huge rubber-stamp for the creeping surveillance society that is a very real threat to us all. Police state? Not yet. Getting there? Bet your ass, we are.

Remember when the boys in blue were your neighbors and "protected and served", and were not militarized thugs who treated every citizen as a potential enemy.

"A travesty gross enough to make a blind statue cry"

So, spoke the 20 y.o. sexual assault victim, "Ashley". Ashley had been raped by a youth counselor, inside a courthouse, when she was 15 years old.

The perp, Tony Simmons, got ten years probation, and no jail time for sexual assault on teenage girls under his supervision. "Ashley", however, received a 12 month sentence on an unrelated charge of falsifying a police report.

The NY Daily News has the horrifying details.

[Ashley] expected Tyson, as Simmons was called, to bring her up to the courtroom where she was scheduled to be sentenced for filing a false police report

Instead, the elevator descended to the basement. The 42-year-old counselor pulled down her pants and raped her with calm, practiced precision that made him all the more terrifying.

When he was done, Simmons pulled her pants back up and the elevator ascended to the courtroom. He raised an extended index finger to his lips in a mute command for her to say nothing.

Just moments after being violated, Ashley was seated next to her mother and before the judge. She was too shocked and terrified to report the attack.

 

Now, however, the judge is rejecting Simmons' plea: A humane first step. And, if there were any justice, he'd be behind bars:

[Judge] Mullen said she could not go ahead with the promised sentence of probation she made in September because a Department of Probation report showed Tony Simmons showed no remorse - and even blamed his underage victims.

Calling Simmons' comments in the report "nothing short of appalling," Mullen said he "seems to suggest he did his [rape] victim a favor."

Usually it's really better if she's blindfolded. This probably wasn't one of them.

12th century English peasants, enjoying one of their many holidays and/or 170 days of yearly vacation.

Per the Telegraph (UK), work life in the dark ages apparently wasn't all that grim, back-breaking 365 day, subsistence farming that we've been led to believe. (I have my own conspiracy about that in a minute). When asked about what the modern world could learn from 12th century Britons, the study authors concluded:

Debt-free living; a lot of holidays and parties and a lack of work ethic; the idea of a 'just price' for goods; some aspects of the medieval guilds and the importance of craftsmanship; and a more spiritual response to money."

A small farmer in the 1100s would be able to make enough money to live off while taking up to 170 days off a year, but since then work has gradually become more dominant in our lives, he said.

He estimated that a similar person in 1495 would need to work for 15 weeks of the year to earn a sufficient amount to live, while in 1564 the figure was 40 weeks and today most British households need two people on full-time incomes to maintain a home and family.

A tale of two countries...Canada wins.

What a juxtaposition. On the same day, two large, North American centrist democracies weighed environmental legislation...

In this corner, is Canada, with some of the Earth's most beautiful virgin forests. Long a haunt of commercial logging, Canada has finally stepped up to the plate to protect its wetlands, open range and forests. Per the BBC:

Timber companies and environment groups have unveiled an agreement aimed at protecting two-thirds of Canada's vast forests from unsustainable logging.

Over 72 million hectares are included in what will become the world's largest commercial forest conservation deal.
Logging will be totally banned on some of the land, in the hope of sustaining endangered caribou populations.
Timber companies hope the deal will bring commercial gains, as timber buyers seek higher ethical standards.
The total protected area is about twice the size of Germany, and equals the area of forest lost globally between 1990 and 2005.
"The importance of this agreement cannot be overstated," said Avrim Lazar, president and CEO of the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC).

In this corner, is the United States. For some ridiculous reason having solely to do with protecting some of the largest corporations on Earth, the U.S. has a cap of a paltry $75 million dollars for oil spill liability. To put it mildly, the clean up of the spill in the Gulf could easily cost $10 billion. That limits BPs liability to less than 1/100th of a percent. The rest is to be shouldered by the taxpayers.

Naturally, this absurd limitation needs to be removed, or the cap raised, a matter Congress was to take up yesterday. But, per NBC News:

WASHINGTON - As an Obama administration official acknowledged lax regulation prior to the Gulf oil spill, Senate Democrats on Tuesday were foiled in their bid to dramatically lift a cap on oil companies' economic liability for spills.

President Barack Obama said he was disappointed that the proposal had stalled in the U.S. Senate, and blasted Republicans he said had stopped it.

"I am disappointed that an effort to ensure that oil companies pay fully for disasters they cause has stalled in the United States Senate on a partisan basis," Obama said in a statement.

So, there you have it. As Canada is trying to create sustainable forestry and ethical business practices to prevent an ecological collapse, American Republicans are shielding the 5th largest corporation on the planet; a company whose profits in four days could pay for the entire clean-up and mediation of the mess that itself created. Winner: Canada. Loser, the Gulf ecosystem, the Gulf economy, and the taxpayers.

To summarize, Rockstar’s latest game lets you hogtie a nun, kidnap her to the desert and grind the holy sister into bloody chunks and red mist under the wheels of a speeding train — an outrageous series of events lovingly captured on video and glibly presented below.

The game, Red Dead Redemption, actually looks awesome: It's lovely, vividly rendered, and full of verisimilitude. Too bad that young men in America are increasingly attracted to the Coliseum of digital torture, mutilation and creatively-horrific death; because imagination could probably stand on it's own here.

What a waste of all this talent.

When pressed about his reasons, Mixa emphatically denied molesting the fucking orphans in his care; rather, he admitted to...get this...beating them and physically abusing them.

This should make you cringe, and, unsurprisingly, it's one of the first images available when you image search "what the fuck".  As a general rule, humans can't abide children being hurt, even accidentally...much less inflicting evil or harm upon them.

Let that sink in for a second...the Bishop denies sexually assaulting children, and, instead, offers as his justification, the simpler time honored defense of "no, I didn't ass-fuck the orphans, I just beat the shit out out of them...

January 21st, 2010: The Day Democracy Died

The news has couched this in terms of "campaign finance", but yesterday's ruling by the Supreme Court was, without any hyperbole, more devastating to the American system of governance than any in recent memory. In essence, the Supreme Court held that corporations could make direct contributions, of any amount, to politicians and political causes. And, there's a punch line, because of the myth of a corporation as a human beings (within the meaning of the 14th Amendment) any governmental attempts to cap, regulate or oversee these contributions was a direct and unconstitutional abridgement of free speech.

This disregards wholly that money is not speech, that a corporation is not a natural natural person (no matter how much the Robber Baron courts of the 1880s wanted it to be), that this opens the trough to every politician to practically be bought and paid for, that this ends the era of publicly-financed and equitable election, and that the interests of the very very few will soon outbid the will of the people.

We all lose in this folks. And, while I'm as pissed off at the Obama administration as I've ever been, he nailed it in the press release yesterday:

With its ruling today, the Supreme Court has given a green light to a new stampede of special interest money in our politics. It is a major victory for big oil, Wall Street banks, health insurance companies and the other powerful interests that marshal their power every day in Washington to drown out the voices of everyday Americans. This ruling gives the special interests and their lobbyists even more power in Washington--while undermining the influence of average Americans who make small contributions to support their preferred candidates. That's why I am instructing my Administration to get to work immediately with Congress on this issue. We are going to talk with bipartisan Congressional leaders to develop a forceful response to this decision. The public interest requires nothing less.

No clever pictures here, no witticisms, no smart-ass comments, just a question for you. Do you think that your neighbors will ever be able  to outspend Exxon-Mobil to decide whether to clean up your beaches? Can you raise up enough scratch to fund a candidate who, unlike Dow and ADM, believes that dumping millions of tons of chemicals in the air is bad news? Do you have the wallet that can match Wal Mart when a referendum on worker safety, worker conditions and overtime comes before Congress? Do you have the greenbacks to outbid Aetna or BCBS when health care comes before a vote?

We are all losers. And there is a term for a centralized industrial-governmental-business entanglement...it's called, again without hyperbole, fascism. And, if you don't like that term, fuck you, and take it up with Webster's.

The Coolest Man You've Never Heard of....

When he does it, it's not creepy...

Meet James May, a modern-day (and real version) of Mr. Magorium. May is the host of an upcoming BBC program entitled "Toy Stories", which -as you'd imagine, is about toys and imagination. And, in his words, is designed to "get kids out of their bedrooms and away from their Playstations"

Hey you, out of your room, and in front of the television where you belong....

But, May also did something that you and I never, ever in a million years could have dreamed of...he built an entire, fully functional, house -with operational plumbing- out of 3.3 million Legos.

 

I do imagine that the hallway is pretty easy to keep clean....

Alas, all is not well in the UK Legoland. May and 1000 volunteers built his monument in a vineyard, and now, with the season upon them, it's time to reclaim the grapes. That normally wouldn't be a problem, however, Lego UK, has refused to take this awesome exhibit....Because it will be too expensive to move. Even worse, May and his motley crew of blockheads can't even give the toys away...because Lego claims it will dilute the sales of their toys.

 

3.3 million Legos = thousands of happy kids. Thanks for nothing, Lego.

To make the story even more bizarre, he can't give the structure to a private benefactor because British law prohibits anyone other than Lego using them for an attraction.   So, what happens on Tuesday if an impasse cannot be overcome? According to Court-order, workers have the go ahead to fucking chainsaw it....In an act that can only be described as wasteful beyond all belief, and incredibly dickish, Lego is going to let this happen too...

Hmmmm, this stain-glassed window needs more chainsaw...

 That apparently is the logic being employed by Indian MP, Shantaram Naik.

Mr. Naik probably really gets off on the hot, consensual action in "The Accused".

Naik is from the now-infamous Goa region of India, where the international case of 15 year old Scarlett Keeling has put the city on the map. Keeling was an attractive 15 year old Brit touring the area. She was drugged, abducted and raped by a local bartender and one other man, with her body later being found in the river. Even then, it took the Indian government a disgracefully long time to correct the autopsy to indicate that she had died of unnatural causes rather than drowning. Goa is a well-known font of sexual assaults and other tourist attacks, so much so that some governments are warning their citizens to steer clear.

Naik, responding to the Russian government's concerns that its citizens might not be safe in Goa, came up with the stupefying logic that sexual assaults occuring after midnight are not rape, hell, aren't even a crime.

"An alleged rape of a lady who moves with strangers for days together even beyond middle of the night is to be treated on different footings," said Mr Naik, as opposition MPs shouted their disapproval.

Some things you can't make up...this is one of them.

Lunchroom "pizza", with the horrifying meat paste in the middle...

Remember being a kid and eating all of the nasty fare prepared for you by the "lunch room ladies"? It was a veritable horrorshow of gustatory abomination. Remember that sneaking suspicion that we all had, that deep down inside our parents/teachers/principals all hated us and/or wanted us to die?

After all, they gave us the above "pizza", as well as....

The "corndog" with more ground-up rectum-per-bite than any other lunchroom fare....

 

The "fish" that had never seen a body of water....

 

The sad, cold "hamburger": 80% soy, 5% beef, 15% indeterminate filler...garnished with a single lonely, onion-tasting pickle served at room temperature and as transparent as gauze.

And, don't forget, those special Holiday Treats....

The creamed, cubed "turkey" with tepid, snotty gravy served over "potatoes"....

Well, come to find out, we weren't just paranoid...they really were out to get us: Jack In The Box and McDonald's, who have infested thousands with e.coli and hepatitis, actually undergo more rigorous screening than school lunches...Eat up kids...

Because, as you know, children are our future....

Facebook & Politics Don't Mix

Tens of millions of Americans have a facebook account, I am no exception. If you've played any of the interactive games, you will notice a company called Zynga. They are responsible for some of the more addictive games, such as Mafia Wars, Farmville, Yoville, etc.

Stop me before I click again....

These are devilishly addictive little applications, when, in all likelihood, they shouldn't be. You click through selected "jobs" and build a farm, an aquarium, a criminal enterprise and have predetermined goals. However, to get to the higher levels of achievement, you can exchange virtual gaming dollars for your real-life, hard-earned ducets. This is how Zynga was able to make a $250 million dollar profit last year. 

You mean this isn't legal tender?

  

Some people, however, are too cheap to pay X amount for a few widgets or peppercorns, and prefer to just pace things out and let the game progress (for free) --your truly among them. However, for those really, really impatient tightwads, there are other ways to get the bonanza, loot, bushels or whatever Zynga is peddling...off-site "sponsors".

These sponsors sites and services are usually free; the mark goes to 3rd Party site, and agrees to fill out a survey, form or review, and in exchange, they are given virtual dollars to spend at Zynga's site to in turn purchase bric-a-brac for the Facebook game. And, everyone is happy.

Internet win, hooray!!!

"Surely",  you're thinking to yourself, "this is fairly benign, and couldn't possibly be used to manipulate public opinion on any pressing, serious National issues, right?*" You would be wrong. Enter the always-shady, always-sheisty Republican Party. One third party outfit, Gambit, has "partnered" with the GOP, hospitals and insurance giants to manufacture "grassroots support" for destroying/delaying/confusing health care reform; a practice known as "astroturfing" because of the fake "grass roots" campaigning.

True fact: The only thing that frightens children more than Republicans are demonic, flesh-eating clowns.

How does this work? Adults, teens, adolescents, and children as old as 13, click on the Gambit site to earn free Mafia/Fish/Farm-bucks. They enter their name and email address and press "click", and at the end, they are duly rewarded. However, unbeknownst to them the site automatically generates an email to Congress, in their name, that reads as follows:

"I am concerned a new government plan could cause me to lose the employer coverage I have today. More government bureaucracy will only create more problems, not solve the ones we have."

Holy Bait-n-Switch Batman! Who are these "grass roots" organizations and individuals that 15 year olds are throwing their support behind? It's the "Get Health Reform Right" people. With a name that Orwellian, you'd think it would be mega-billion dollar corporations...and you'd be right. GHRR is composed of:

Please, Zynga/Gambit**, leave Mafia Wars alone and go back to mere monetary predation of idiots with a PayPal account.  Addictive clicking is just that...addictive clicking to slake the thirst of boredom, it's not an opportunity to manipulate public opinion, especially when the public does not have that opinion, and is unaware --in any event-- of what teh hell you're doing.

Oh, sure, it's got its historical charm, the Liberty Bell, the Constitution and Constitution Hall, a statue of Rocky, and the worst collection of sports teams ever.  And, it's got what you'd expect:  subhuman mongoloids who typify everything cliche about the American Eastern Seaboard, to wit, obnoxious, indecent, people who cheer misery, despise happiness, are cheerful in their own corpulence whilst walking over the starving homeless.

In short, it's a Yankee city.

 

There's a reason Clubber wanted to kick Rocky's ass...Rocky was probably being a typical Philly dick.

But that's not the sole reason to hate Philly, nor are those things necessarily indicative of reasons to skip this midden shithole. THIS STORY, however, totally typifies Philadelphia:

Rivera complained of feeling pain in his left arm and abdomen, and was told to sit in the waiting area, said police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore.

At some point during the next hour, Rivera, a longtime bilingual counselor at Olney High School, lost consciousness. He inadvertently became a target, Vanore said, to three other people in the waiting room - a black woman, a 30-something, 5-foot-8 black man in dark pants who limped, and a second man, who was later arrested at the hospital and identified as Richard Alten, 44.

Alten signed up to be seen by a doctor, while his two cohorts sat near Rivera. "At some point, [Alten] is observed taking the victim's watch and passing it to the other man," Vanore said.

Yes, good ole' Philly, leave a man --who's having an obvious heart attack-- to wait in an E.R. for over an hour. In the meanwhile, some of Philadelphia's other upstanding citizens fucking rob him...in broad daylight...in a hospital...and no one stops it. Yes, Philly, you are a truly miserable flea on the asshole of humanity.
